Authentic Humility

Authentic Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less. For a founder, it is a competitive advantage because it lets you see reality as it is, not as your ego wants it to be.

Founder ceiling: if you are the smartest person in every room, the company is limited by your ceiling. Humility is what breaks that ceiling.

Section 1|

Defining the core pillars

Knowing your limits: intellectual honesty. You can say what you are great at, and where you are weak, then hire accordingly.

Coachability: how fast you can take advice from anyone and turn it into better action.

Vulnerability: being willing to be unsure in front of the team. This creates psychological safety, so issues surface early.

Section 2|

What you should learn

Dunning Kruger effect: understand how low skill can create high confidence. It helps you stay curious and grounded.

Radical transparency: idea meritocracy, the best idea wins, no matter who said it.

No stakes asks: learn to ask for help in a way that signals commitment, not weakness. Replace “I do not know what to do” with “I found a gap, who can teach me.”

How to learn it

Key idea: practice humility by putting your ego in harm's way on purpose.

A. The shadow exercise

Shadow an employee for a day. Do not advise. Watch and learn the real work.

Goal: respect the expertise you do not have.

B. The 360 degree roast

Every six months, ask for anonymous feedback: stop, start, keep. Share what you learned and what you will change.

Goal: build coachability with proof.

C. Public failure logs

Share a failure of the week and what you learned, in Slack or an internal update.

Goal: normalize vulnerability so people take smart risks.

D. Hire better than yourself

Look for people who are smarter than you in their domain.

Goal: test if you feel threatened or excited.
